❓ Do Pivot Doors Have a Self-closing Function?

Compared with a swing door, a pivot door has a unique advantage. When pushed, it can naturally return to the closed position, and the pivot mechanism provides cushioning during the closing process. This reduces impact and helps extend the overall lifespan of the iron door.
This is also why pivot doors typically do not require the roller catches. A roller catch is designed to hold a door in place, but on a pivot door, it creates resistance during the self-closing motion. This resistance can cause friction and scratching on the door's finish.
For the same reason, we also don't recommend using a one-unit handle with a latch bolt. When a pivot door closes automatically, the latch can rub against the door surface, which may gradually damage the paint.

❓ What Is the Clear Opening Width of a Pivot Door?

For safety and proper functionality, the clear opening of a pivot door is typically about 3/4 of the total door width.
For example, if a single pivot door has an overall width of 72", then the approximate passage width would be: Passage width ≈ (72" * 3/4) − 2" (jamb width) − 1" (half of the door thickness)≈ 54" − 2" − 1" = 51"
Note: The calculation above is for reference only. The actual passage width may vary slightly depending on the door style and overall dimensions. Please refer to the CAD drawing you received for the measurement.

Focusing on Artisan Details

① Handleset

A handleset is crucial for ensuring door security. Whether it's an integrated handle or a combination of handle & lockset, it ensures smooth operation and reliable locking, providing secure access control.

② Weather Stripping

Weather stripping is important for enhancing a door's insulation and energy efficiency. It creates a tight seal around the door frame, preventing drafts, moisture, and dust from entering while reducing heat loss. This improves indoor comfort and helps lower energy costs.

③ Tempered Glass

Tempered Glass is a specially heat-treated glass that is stronger than regular glass, offering excellent durability and safety. If broken by strong external force, it shatters into small, blunt-edged pieces, reducing the risk of injury. Artisan provides different layers of tempered glass based on the door's purpose. For interior doors, Single-pane Tempered Glass is ideal for a lightweight design. For entry doors in standard regions, Double-Pane Tempered Glass is a better choice as it enhances insulation and soundproofing, improving overall home comfort.
Impact Glass: Triple-Pane Hurricane-Resistant Impact Glass is a composite structure made of three layers of tempered glass. For homeowners in hurricane-prone areas, three-layer impact glass is an ideal choice due to its enhanced impact resistance, providing significantly better protection. It not only increases the strength and impact resistance of the glass but also improves thermal insulation and soundproofing performance.

④ Door Sweep

The door sweep is usually installed at the top and bottom of a pivot door. Its primary functions include preventing cold air and drafts from entering the room, blocking dust and debris, and also playing a significant role in waterproofing and sealing.

⑤ Top Pivot Hinge

The top pivot is located on the upper door frame, distributing the overall weight of the door to ensure smooth rotation and long-term stability.

⑥ Pivot Mechanism

The bottom pivot mechanism is positioned on the lower door frame, supporting the door's weight, reducing friction during rotation, and controlling the closing speed for smooth operation, ultimately extending the door's lifespan.

⑦ Installation Methods

Mounting tabs on Frame: They are metal plates used to secure the door frame to the wall or other supporting structures during installation. This method is more complex compared to pre-bored hole installation, but it provides a stronger and more secure connection, making it ideal for heavy doors or situations that require high stability. It is commonly used for exterior doors, where durability and secure attachment are crucial.

Pre-bored Holes on the Jamb: Pre-bored holes refer to pre-drilled installation holes in the door frame, designed for directly securing the frame to the wall or supporting structure. This installation method simplifies the process, ensuring a safe and efficient setup with minimal impact on the surrounding wall. Pre-bored hole installation is often used for interior doors, where ease of installation and a less invasive approach are key considerations.
